's animal charity is sending 13 elephants to their deaths by flying them to Kenya, the herd's former keeper has warned.
The Aspinall Foundation's decision to rewild the animals 4,400 miles away is 'ridiculous', David Magner claimed.
He said they were 'too used' to being in captivity at Howletts Wildife Park in Kent and would not be able to cope without human help.
Meanwhile African wildlife expert Professor Keith Somerville said the herd 'is not remotely suitable for release into a totally different environment'.
The Kent University academic warned they will also be vulnerable to severe gastric problems and to salt poisoning from the water.
The Aspinall Foundation wants to fly the elephants to Kenya as part of what it claims is a 'groundbreaking' resettlement project.
Experts are currently drawing up a soft-release plan ahead of the herd's transfer and the group will undergo an extensive adaptation phase prior to their release.
The charity says the country has a great record in recent years of protecting elephants from poaching and in managing human-elephant conflict.
But critics said the move was unsuitable for the herd amid fears over water quality, human conflict and the inability to forage for food.
